My family and I were in New York City this month for the Dynasty Electric record release party. I find NYC incredibly inspiring, but that's something for a whole other blog post.
We decided to be cultured and visit the Museum of Natural History. During our exploration I came across a fascinating placard about Samarkand. This city is fabled for its prominent location along the Silk Road trade route. The description read "...there was no end of variety in costume and speech, in ways of thinking, behaving and worshiping. Cultural diversity, like genetic diversity, fosters evolution." Wait a minute, rewind that. Cultural diversity fosters evolution? It goes on to say "...the diversity of Asia uniquely generated and advanced human civilization. It is the loss of that diversity, in Asia and in the world, which threatens civilization far more than Tartar or Mongol ever did. The exhibits in this Hall illustrate human diversity and its contribution to human success in adjusting, physically and spiritually, to the many environments of the Asian world."
So what the Museum of Natural History is claiming is its our evolutionary imperative to rock on. And by rock on I mean be our unique, dazzling selves. Bring our own one-of-a-kind viewpoint to the world, scout out unusual music, adorn ourselves creatively, think outside the box, connect to the stream of untapped genius floating out there in the Universe, waiting to be discovered. It is not only satisfying and liberating, it is necessary for survival of the species. Wow, I never thought of it that way but I am happy to oblige.
So what will you do to rock on today? Its your duty to be YOU!
